Hello,

A very warm welcome to our summer newsletter.  After all the football, tennis and now cricket and golf, many of you will be looking forward to a summer break, at home or abroad.

For many this is well deserved as new research shows that 1 in 4 UK workers regularly work all day without a break. We focus on this in this issue and what can be done about it.

Whatever your plans this summer we hope this newsletter makes interesting and useful reading.  Please feel free to forward this to anyone who might be interested.

Kind regards,

Christina Carlsen
p.s. - A huge thank you to everyone who has recently recommended us to family, friends and colleagues.  We seem to have had a sudden surge of new referrals, all keen to get better and very enthusiastic because you have told them how effective our treatment is!!

The bad habits that are damaging our health
Recent research from the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) shows that one in four people in the UK regularly work all day without taking a break and are putting their health at risk.

46% of workers said their pains and aches were connected with working in the same position for long periods of time.

53% of workers said they usually or always go to work in spite of feeling physically unwell or stressed.  Of these 31% experienced pain at least once a week.

Physiotherapists believe detrimental habits at work cause serious damage to our health and cost employers gigantic sums in absenteeism and lost production.    For the full article from the CSP click here

What can you do about it?

Take a lunch break - do not work through lunch.
Take regular short breaks - get up from your  desk every 15 to 20 minutes.
Stretch your neck and back every 20 minutes - ask your physio to prescribe the best exercises for your needs.
Stretch your arms and wrists to avoid RSI - do not keep them in the same position for long.
Ask your employer for a workstation assessment (WSA) if you are uncomfortable or in pain.

Pop into the clinic for a free leaflet 'Fit for Work'
(available from 29th July)

Christina specialises in work station assessments for home and office workers that teaches you how to position your equipment (screen, mouse etc) and adjust your chair in addition to learning best posture and stretches.

Workstation Assessment Case Study

Workplace Case Study

Presenting Problem: Neck and Shoulder Pain and Stiffness

Duration: Two and a half years

Background: Mrs C's employer asked Ealing Physiotherapy to see what could be done to solve recurring neck and shoulder pain and stiffness.  It seemed to be work-related as Mrs C was much better during holidays and weekends, but had recently had to have time off during a busy period which brought the whole matter to light.

Christina Carlsen's assessment:  Mrs C was extremely hard working, and unhappy that she had to have time off.  She is 5 ft 1 inch tall and was working in a chair with very long arm rests.  So she had to bend forward to get close to her desk.  In addition, she had no foot rest. She sat too low with her shoulders pulled up in order to rest her feet on the floor and at the same time reach the keyboard.

Solution: Christina removed the arm rests from the chair, and a foot rest was ordered.  Mrs C's neck and shoulder area could now be relaxed while she did her work. (If Mrs C had preferred arm rests, chairs with shorter ones could have been found.) Additionally Christina showed her some neck and shoulder stretches to release the strain, and encouraged her to take a mini-break every twenty minutes.

Conclusion: Mrs C had gone through unnecessary worry about not doing her job during a busy period, and that there might be something seriously wrong.  The solution was simple - her chair and working space were not appropriate for her.  After the assessment she felt able to look after her neck and shoulders herself and avoid pain, as well as continue to enjoy her busy workload and concentrate better in the future.

Give your back a break

Have you ever thought that if we all keep a good posture, we would never have much of a back problem?  Adding another stabilising training program, such as Yoga, Pilates or Core Stability training would also help prevent it but remember it has to be tailored to every individual and if you have back pain do them after proper consultation with your Physiotherapist.

We clinicians dealing with back pain also have frustrations at times to try to make back pain sufferers adopt good postures.  The reason being it is sometimes not practical to keep a good position throughout the whole day.

Give your back a break!!

Set a reminder on your computer where you work that pops up every hour with a key word (e.g.  POSTURE, GET YOUR BACK STRAIGHT etc) to help you adopt a good position.  You don't necessarily have to avoid bad posture every minute of the day, but at least give it a break in between your daily work load.

Remember you reduce the risk of back pain if you frequently give your back a break from bad posture!!
